🤔 What is this?

Have you ever come across a hash such as 5f4dcc3b5aa765d61d8327deb882cf99 and wondered what type of hash that is? 🤔

Name-that-hash will name that hash type!

🔥 Features

  • 📺 Popularity Ratings - Name that hash will show you the most popular hashes first. In older systems it would prioritise Skype Hash the same as Active Directory's NTLM! Which makes as much sense as saying that my GitHub is as popular as VSCode 📈
  • Hash Summaries - no more wondering whether it's MD5 or NTLM. Name-that-hash will summarise the main usage of each hash, allowing you to make an informed & decisive choice
  • 🌈 Colour Output - Don't worry, the colours were hand-selected with a designer to be 100% accessible and gnarly 😎
  • 🤖 JSON output && API - Want to use Name-That-Hash in your project? We are API first, CLI second. Use JSON output or import us as a Python module! 💾
  • 👵 Updated! - HashID was last updated in 2015. Hash-Identifier in 2011! Name-That-Hash is a 2021 project 🦧
  • Accessible - We are 100% committed to making this an accessible hacking tool 🙏
  • 🎫 Extensible - Add new hashes as quickly as you can edit this README. No, seriously -- it's that easy! 🎱

🥊 Name-That-Hash vs HashID vs Hash-Identifier

Features Name-That-Hash HashID Hash-Identifier
Last updated 2021, check commits. 17/03/2015 30/09/2011

Honestly, do you need any more convincing? 😂

But, let's look at the features more in-depth.

📈 Feature Comparison

Name-that-hash proudly displays the most likely hash types

Here HashID displays Skype before NTLM, whereas Name-That-Hash understands popularity of hashes so places NTLM before Skype.

📕 You can also see Name-That-Hash displaying a summary, whereas HashID doesn't. In the default view it also displays John + HashCat information. Because let's face it, the only reason you're using this tool is to figure out what to put into HashCat! 🐱‍🚀

Name-That-Hash is radically different from HashID, I'm not going to list all the differences -- you can physically see them yourselves 😎

💌 Accessibility

Name-That-Hash is an accessible hacking tool. That means we spent time designing things, such as....

No long text or ascii art here

Removing the ASCII Art of very long "least likely" text blocks using --accessible.

Doing this means you don't get access to least likely, and if the hash is in that pile it'd suck. So we also have --no-banner.

Which removes the ASCII art banner.

🔨 Installation

Easy Mode Use our web app at https://nth.skerritt.blog.

You can install using Python's Pip.

pip3 install name-that-hash

or:

pip install name-that-hash

And then run:

nth

To use.

💌 Thanks

Many thanks to Jabba & Jayyy for their help :)

Thanks to HashID and Hash-Identifier for their work in this field, which heavily inspired this. 💝 The database of hashes was originally taken from them, but we've significantly modified it. Thank you so much for creating that database of 3000+ hashes 😻

Thanks to the TryHackMe Community too, and especially Oriel for her feedback on early versions.

And special thanks to Varg on his masterful understanding of colour theory 🌈

Finally, thanks too Blackout for helping write descriptions of hashes 🐱‍👤

  • Add Kerberos Hashes

    Add Kerberos Hashes

    We're missing a lot of Kerberos hashes from this page: https://hashcat.net/wiki/doku.php?id=example_hashes

    Ctrl+F "Kerberos".

    It's important we add them :)

    See https://github.com/HashPals/Name-That-Hash/blob/main/name_that_hash/hashes.py for our DB of hashes.

  • Future request: support base64 encoded hashes

    Future request: support base64 encoded hashes

    Many systems either store hashes as base64 encoded strings, or use it in user-interfaces to prevent data entry errors. Name-That-Hash currently does not recognize a hash that's base64 encoded, instead suggesting an unrelated format (example screenshot). I can think of some scenario's to support this:

    1. when the common hash regexes fail, fall back to a regex for base64 (example). If it matches then decode, then retry the flow using the decoded string. This risks a RAM usage spike when the input string is huge.
    2. add a --base64 or similar flag to let the user manually signal a decode of which the result will then be used in the flow
    3. combine 1. and 2. trying the base64 regex when the others fail, then suggest the --base64 flag to the user

  • Added one new Office hash type and updated some of the old ones

    Added one new Office hash type and updated some of the old ones

    I went through the Office hashes in the hashcat examples, added one new hash type and updated some of the old ones. Here are all of the changes:

    • added john="office" to Microsoft Office 2010 and to Microsoft Office 2013
    • added john="oldoffice" to hash types 9800, 9810, 9820 and 9720 (I tested each example with john)
    • separated MS Office ⇐ 2003 $3, SHA1 + RC4, collider #2 as this hash type has another 10 characters at the end which caused it to not get matched to the hash
    • same happened to the MS Office ⇐ 2003 $0/$1, MD5 + RC4, collider #2 but it was added again, so it matched correctly but I removed the old entry
    • added one new hash type MS Office 2016 - SheetProtection
    • added two new tests - for the new one and for the one I separated

    Pytest ran without any errors. Hope all the changes are okay as then we should be done with Office hash types :D

  • Added a space before

    Added a space before "Summary" in the output if there is no john

    I noticed that if there is only hashcat printed without john, there is no space before summary. If I understand the code correctly, this should add a space after HC if there is no john.

    screenshot

    While reading the code I also noticed a small typo in the comment, so that is also fixed. :)

    • added "Kerberos 5, etype 18, Pre-Auth",
    • added "Kerberos 5, etype 17, Pre-Auth" twice as hashcat and john support it differently,
    • changed regex of "Kerberos 5 AS-REQ Pre-Auth" as it was too broad and it matched to some of the new ones,
    • fixed individual Kerberos tests

    Fixed it so I hope it all works now :)

  • Shortened output and function change

    Shortened output and function change

    Took a look at the issue raised by @delishouscake (#12) and thought I would combine their thoughts into a pull request to make your work a little easier. This puts every 'Least Likely' on a separate line, vice a long long of hashes, also removed the period at the end of each as a delimiter is no longer necessary at the end of the line. Additionally, separated the hash identifier and the hash category with a - for easier reading. Did not change the colors, as I believe that's more within your purview than mine.

    Also, renamed the 'greppable' function to 'grepable' for spelling, and corrected all references to it in the other modules/sections of the tool.

    Using the example md5 in the help, final output looks like this: (keep in mind, this is in a docker environment, colors are not indicative of a normal running shell):

    nth-snapshot

    Hopefully this helps!

    Update Dockerfile for nth vice ciphey

    Previous dockerfile entrypoint was pointed at 'ciphey' vice 'nth'. Corrected this, and removed the 'CMD' at the bottom. Tested with sudo docker run --rm -it nth:latest --text '5f4dcc3b5aa765d61d8327deb882cf99' and with --greppable and had success with both commands.

  • Add specific PKZIP hashes and tests

    Add specific PKZIP hashes and tests

    I'm using Name-That-Hash for a tool of mine, and I wanted it to recognize ZIP hashes. There was already a PKZIP hash regex that matched any type of PKZIP hash, but hashcat uses 5 different types. So I made these 5 regexes that match all 5 of these different types.

    These are the 5 types of PKZIP that I added. You can click on them to see some tests in Regexr.

    It took me quite a bit to understand how these hashes work, and how you can tell them apart. So to aid in understanding it here are my very rough notes:

    In the Regexr links above you can see all the test hashes I've tested them with. In here I put a combination of the john PKZIP format tests and some I found online. All hashes can be cracked with hashcat with the format it found.
    In the Python tests I used the hashcat example hashes.

    EDIT (RAR archives)

    I have since also added hashes for RAR archives.

    There was not a lot of documentation about these hash formats, but I've added what I could. Here are the 4 types of RAR archives:

    Again, I made some notes to understand these hashes. Here are those very rough notes:

    $RAR3$*type*hex(salt)*hex(partial-file-contents)

    $RAR3$*type*hex(salt)       *hex(crc)*PACK_SIZE*UNP_SIZE*0*archive_name*offset-for-ciphertext*method

    $RAR3$*type*hex(salt)       *hex(crc)*PACK_SIZE*UNP_SIZE*1*hex(full encrypted file)                                        *method

    EDIT 2 (KeePass)

    Another update. I have also added KeePass hashes in the commit. There were 2 examples in the "Add new hash types" issue, but in the hashcat example hashes I found 4 different types. So I made 4 regexes for the 4 different types, they are all hashcat mode 13400. Here are the regexes with tests as always:

    I found this python implementation very helpful in understanding these KeePass hashes.

    Note: I also fixed a few small issues with the existing regexes I faced.

  • Build an automated test matrix across John/Hashcat/name-that-hash

    Build an automated test matrix across John/Hashcat/name-that-hash

    It would be nice to automatically test sample hashes against name-that-hash, and then verify that the same hashes work against both John and Hashcat using the modes we have in our DB.

    Similarly, in #59 we discovered that John and Hashcat don't always accept the same formats for what seems to be the same hash type. If any of our regexes in name-that-hash are permissive enough (e.g. optional values) some hashes will not work against both John and Hashcat even though we claim it should. We should break these out to separate hash types in name-that-hash if they do exist.

    It would be really nice if there's an existing DB anywhere mapping John modes to Hashcat, but to my knowledge name-that-hash is the only example of it.

    We have a few hashes in test_main.py.. but it would be awesome if we could test every hash. Actual code coverage measurements won't work, our DB is a python object, not code. But we should use something similar to ensure every value is tested.

    Data

    We could add sample hashes to each entry in our hashes DB perhaps? And use them for automated testing?

    We should pull in sample hashes from both John and Hashcat and use them for our tests

    • Hashcat example hashes, this may actually be comprehensive, I'm not sure. But this only includes one hash per mode, if any hashcat modes have any parts of the hash as optional, more than one test is needed per hash
    • John sample hashes Unlike hashcat, this list is far from comprehensive
    • John unit tests. I think --test on john might use these, but I can't see any way to print them all automatically. There are individual tests inside each John mode's source file though.
      • TODO: see if there's a nice way to automatically extract all these test hashes
      • John is GPL2+, we are GPL3. Which means we can pull things from their source.

    Automated testing

    John's --show=formats allows easily testing what modes it matched against the hashes. We could probably test every mode at the same time?

    ./john   --show=formats /tmp/hashes.txt
    [{"lineNo":1,"ciphertext":"$krb5pa$17$hashcat$HASHCATDOMAIN.COM$a17776abe5383236c58582f515843e029ecbff43706d177651b7b6cdb2713b17597ddb35b1c9c470c281589fd1d51cca125414d19e40e333","rowFormats":[]},
    {"lineNo":2,"ciphertext":"$krb5pa$17$user1$EXAMPLE.COM$$c5461873dc13665771b98ba80be53939e906d90ae1ba79cf2e21f0395e50ee56379fbef4d0298cfccfd6cf8f907329120048fd05e8ae5df4","rowFormats":[{"label":"krb5pa-sha1","prepareEqCiphertext":true,"canonHash":["$krb5pa$17$user1$EXAMPLE.COM$EXAMPLE.COMuser1$c5461873dc13665771b98ba80be53939e906d90ae1ba79cf2e21f0395e50ee56379fbef4d0298cfccfd6cf8f907329120048fd05e8ae5df4"]}]}]

    Hashcat appears to have nothing similar. Hashcat has no "dry run, parse hashes only" mode that I know of, but it will log something like this if it can't parse a hash. Also, this would likely require running hashcat once per each mode we would want to test, unlike john's --show=formats that would allow testing everything at once.

    Hashfile '/tmp/hashes.txt' on line 2 ($krb5p...cfd6cf8f907329120048fd05e8ae5df4): Token length exception

    Then of course, test all of them against name-that-hash and see if they are correctly detected. We should also have some kind of coverage to see if we have any hash regexes that never matched any of the test hashes.

  • Add new hash types

    Add new hash types

    Hello! 👋 This issue is perfect for beginners. What you need:

    • Regex knowledge (in Python)
    • Ability to Google 🤓

    We provide support in Discord http://discord.skerritt.blog

    What we want

    Each of these is a hash, and for each hash I want you to:

    • Create a Regex which matches that hash (try not to be broad, try to make it specific)
    • Find the John the Ripper mode
    • Insert it into our Database
    • Write a test for that hash, see https://github.com/HashPals/Name-That-Hash/blob/main/tests/test_main.py#L13-L17

    Example

    Our database is located here: https://github.com/HashPals/Name-That-Hash/blob/main/name_that_hash/hashes.py

    Some regex's match multiple hashes, in that case insert them into the list. Otherwise look here:

    https://github.com/HashPals/Name-That-Hash/blob/main/name_that_hash/hashes.py#L112-L121

    We have our Regex, and a list of hashes:

        Prototype(
            regex=re.compile(r"^[a-f0-9]{32}(:.+)?$", re.IGNORECASE),
            modes=[
                HashInfo(
                    name="MD5",
                    hashcat=0,
                    john="raw-md5",
                    extended=False,
                    description="Used for Linux Shadow files.",
                ),
    ),

    You do not need to write a description.

    Create a prototype with the Regex you created earlier, or find one which already works for the hash.

    Take the name of the hash, the hashcat mode, the john the ripper mode you found earlier and insert it into the DB.

  • 1.10(Jun 13, 2021)

    Big Big Biggggg changes! 🥳

    We added 50 new hashes, but more importantly -- an automated test matrix!

    This test matrix goes through all of our hash database and:

    • Updates the Hashcat mode
    • Updates the John mode (if it can find it, not all of John the Ripper modes are easy to find)
    • Checks the regex against that hash, ensuring all regex are correct

    I am very proud to say we are now the only hash-identifier in the world which can guarantee correct information! Keep an eye out over the next few weeks, as we update our automated-testing program the rest of Name-That-Hash will improve!
