Overview

clipboard-watcher

This repository contains the code of an experiment, in order to understand how hard would it be (if possible) to have an application that can monitor the access of other apps to the clipboard on Linux machines.

At the moment it only supports desktop environments that use X.

Installation

To build and run this demo app, you will need to have the following libraries on your system:

  • libdbus-1-dev
  • libglib2.0-dev

You will also need to have Poetry in order to be able to execute the following commands:

$ poetry install
$ poetry run watcher

    Really interested in this concept, thanks for calling some attention to it.

    I am wondering though, would it be possible to discern between user initiated paste actions through keyboard commands/mouse actions and the likes AND apps trying to get clipboard data on their own without user initiative?

    If so it might be possible to allow the first but block the second, system-wide. Right?

    Maybe even blocking access to the clipboard api by default for everything and then opening it for a fraction of a second when 'user input device' commands are detected and closing it up again when done.

    Usually, a clipboard-watcher like ClipQ watches for changes in clipboard content. This project implements the functionality of watching accesses to clipboard, hence clipboard-access-watcher would be a better name.
