Easy-to-use and powerful offline translation tool

Overview

Introduction

Virtaal is a graphical program for doing translation. It is meant to be easy to use and powerful at the same time. Although the initial focus is on software translation (localisation or l10n), we definitely intend it to be useful for several purposes.

Installation

The easiest way for most users to install Virtaal is through the provided packages, or through the packaging system of their distribution. On the Virtaal website there should be packages for Windows and several other systems. If you want to install from source code, you will need to ensure you have all the dependencies. For more information on building Virtaal to install it yourself, please consult the website here: http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/virtaal/en/latest/building.html

Note that you will probably already want the Translate Toolkit installed and working before you attempt to install Virtaal.

Reporting bugs

Please report bugs by clicking on 'Help->Report bug...' from within Virtaal (this requires a Bugzilla account). Alternatively report directly using this URL: <https://github.com/translate/virtaal/issues/new>

Taking the time to create a bugzilla account will help ensure that you can track progress, provide feedback and allows others to see your bug report.

Design principles

  • Good looking
  • Optimise for the most frequent use cases
  • No necessity for mouse
  • The most important information must be visible by default
  • Only relevant (actionable) widgets should be shown
  • Maximum functionality without setup

    Virtaal docs missing from website

The Virtaal documentation is supposed to be at http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/virtaal/en/latest/ however this location is currently 404.

The absence of this sphinx-generated documentation is currently causing translate-toolkit's CI to fail as it pulls the inter-sphinx mapping as part of the build. Obviously the best thing is for the documentation to come back, but should translate-toolkit stop looking for virtaal's documentation in the interim?

  • Confusing and incorrect handling of backslashes

Confusing and incorrect handling of backslashes

    Version: 0.2

VirTaal displays backslashes in a confusing way. A single backslash in the PO is displayed as a single slash in non-active segments but as a double slash in the active segment. A double backslash in the PO is also displayed as a single slash in non-active segments but as a double slash in the active segment. It gets intersting when there are triple and quadruple and quintuple backslashes in the PO.

The second and third line from the attached PO is from an actual (but weird) TM format. PoEdit has no problems displaying it in a helpful manner (although perhaps not as intelligently).

  • Broken behaviour when merging from templates

Broken behaviour when merging from templates

    Following the next steps:

    1. Open a PO file (foo.po)
    2. Go to File → Update from template
    3. Select the POT template file (bar.pot)
    4. Translate the new untranslated/fuzzy units
    5. Save the file, selecting foo.po as filename and accept to overwrite it

    I get:

    • A traceback that floods the console:

Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/julen/dev/translate/virtaal/virtaal/views/widgets/storetreemodel.py", line 60, in on_get_value unit = self._store[rowref] File "/home/julen/dev/translate/virtaal/virtaal/models/storemodel.py", line 67, in getitem return self.get_unit(index) File "/home/julen/dev/translate/virtaal/virtaal/models/storemodel.py", line 108, in get_unit return self._trans_store.units[self._valid_units[index]] IndexError: list index out of range Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/julen/dev/translate/virtaal/virtaal/views/widgets/storecellrenderer.py", line 159, in do_set_property setattr(self, pspec.name, value) File "/home/julen/dev/translate/virtaal/virtaal/views/widgets/storecellrenderer.py", line 147, in _set_unit if value.isfuzzy(): AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'isfuzzy'

    • The current file view is messed up in Virtaal (units are repeated over and over again)
    • The file has been saved as bar.pot!! foo.po remains as it was before opening the file.

Neither of those errors appear, when using a username that doesn't have those characters and Virtaal works like it should.

  • Quotes handled incorrectly in Virtaal

    Quotes handled incorrectly in Virtaal

When translating a PO file in Virtaal that has smart quotes in it, Virtaal displays it as straight quotes. If the user types ordinary straight quotes, the resultant PO file contains escaped straight quotes, not smart quotes. If the user copies the quotes from the source box, the resultant PO file does contain smart quotes correctly.

However, since the user cannot see in VirTaal which quotes are opening quotes and which ones are closing quotes, he might accidently copy an opening quote to the position of a closing quote, and this shows up in the resultant PO file.

    Attached:

    • original myfile.po (the original file)
    • from virtaal 1 myfile.po (from VirTaal, when typed straight quotes)
    • from virtaal 1 myfile.po (from VirTaal, when copied from source box)
    • quotething.jpg (screenshot of original myfile.po in VirTaal)

Source language spell checking in different UI language

If I'm running in French I get spelling errors for valid source test.

    1. Open Virtaal in English
    2. Open spellchecking-en_GB.po (I'll attach it later)
    3. All text is spelled correctly, languages are identified correctly
    4. Perform the same steps but with French UI ./testlocalisation fr

Observed: The word 'Unrecognized' in the source is marked as a spelling error and the suggestions looks like they are British English

Expected: We should be using American spelling in the source.

Translation was done using Virtaal 0.2-rc1, comments were added in Pootling.

As discussed on IRC channel i'll attach a screenshot for my virtaal installation on WinXP using the standard "Contrast black" color scheme.

For visual impaired persons, the red replacables are too dark to see on black background. And the TM suggestions are too bright in background color to make them read well (at least for me).

Also the tooltips pop up with black text on black background, covering some gui parts with a black box only. Not sure if this can be handled somehow.

Thanks for spending time on this minority problem.

    Enhancement request:

It would be nice if Virtaal displayed word count and string count for the open file (as Poolte does in varios places). It doesn't have to show all the time, but it would be nice if it were at least available as an option in a pulldown (perhaps the File pulldown?). This would be particularly useful when you are working with multiple POT/PO files for the same project and are trying to determine the newest version.

Handle SQLite errors in OpenTran plug-in

    Version: 0.5.2

The Fedora bug at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559263 shows an error received from the OpenTran server which crashes Virtaal. Even though this was a problem with OpenTran itself (http://groups.google.com/group/open-tran/browse_frm/thread/e3b95fde393f36f1?hl=en), the error should be handled discretely in Virtaal.

How to create a new file?

All the manuals tell me how to open a file. I installed virtaal because I saw it as the editor of XLIFF files.

However, I don't see any way to create a new XLIFF file. Because I want to start a new translation.

I used the setup, that proposed me by default the French as install language. I changed it to English. However, the installed product is still in French, and I don't see any setting to switch it to English!

Alt+Down in second text area copies msgid not msgid_plural

When you have plural strings in a po file like this:

    msgid "1 merge request selected"
    msgid_plural "%d merge request selected"
    msgstr[0] ""
    msgstr[1] ""

And you press Alt+Down while the cursor is in the first translation text area the msgid string will be copied.

But the msgid will also be copied while in the second translation text area

It should instead have copied the msgid_plural string.

Difference in msgid_plural and msgstr[1] appears as unchanged string

I have the following in a po file but Virtaal shows it as unchanged string under quality check. Perhaps Virtaal only compares msgid and msgstr[0] which are unchanged. But msgid_plural and msgstr[1] are different.

    msgid "%{text} %{files}"
    msgid_plural "%{text} %{files} files"
    msgstr[0] "%{text} %{files}"
    msgstr[1] "%{text} %{files} filer"

I think Virtaal should not show this as unchanged.
